It Hurts to Be This Sexy 2005-01-14 | 1:51 a.m. Where in the world? One of the best love songs in the world is Kaia Wilson's "Where in the World is Greencastle, Indiana?" off of Ladyman. I put it onto a lot of mixes because it's just so simple and sweet, the kind of song that feels like listening to someone's heartbeat late at night while they're sleeping. And I just finished reading a collection of pieces from old zines, several of which were written by Tammy Rae Carland. Basically everything that she wrote hit me right in the gut. She's smart, yet unpretentious, and the way she talks about class is dead-on.
So tonight I decided to google her and see what I could find (art, writing, the usual sorts of things). And I come to a really brief bio in with some of her photographs, and suddenly everything clicked. She taught at a school in Greencastle, Indiana.
Kaia wrote that song for Tammy Rae Carland. It should have been obvious, but I just never made the connection.
I suppose what struck me is the reality of all the feelings behind the song. And then putting them together with this other person. It's clear that I don't know either of these people personally, but somehow they became so much more human to me.
I don't know what exactly I'm trying to say except that this beautiful little song is even more beautiful to me now.
"Yeah, I miss you so much. Where'd you go, so far away?"
