It Hurts to Be This Sexy 2004-10-19 | 2:07 p.m. 100% dragtastic Though the weather displeases me greatly today (it's rainy and cold), I find it impossible to complain about the general state of affairs in my life. I've been on several dates with The Missed Connection, and they've all gone really well. By really well, I may mean that they've all resulted in sleepovers, good conversation, and leisurely walks to the train. In fact, that's exactly what I mean. We also had a talk about making out with other people on our last date. That went well, and it is agreed that we are not Exclusive. Bring on the kids who wanna make out with me! Bring them!
Alas, they've not been broughten already. I thought there'd be the makeout love at IDKE this weekend, but mostly there was just the dancing and the crushing and the fun and cute people.
Nevertheless, I had a b-l-a-s-t hanging out with my fellow dragbots. My Squaddies are smart and fun and cool and mostly a political crowd, and I got to meet and hang out with other really amazing troupes and dragsters from Portland, Philly (%%diary-bevin%%, for instance), and Tucson. I thought I'd have more of a chance to bond with new dragsters, but there really wasn't much time for meeting and hanging out.
We performed on Friday and Saturday. The Friday show was crazy hectic, but we got to go on early, which was pretty swell. We did a number about coming out as trans and seeking acceptance from conservative family members, then eventually turning to your chosen family for support. It went really well.
We stayed and danced for several hours, and got to see the Best Drag Act Ever, an examination of the follies of Atkins with people dressed as steak and bread. Bread kicked steak's ass, and the delightful queen who had been contemplating the Atkins diet went down on bread (feeling up its pat of butter). In the end, there was a breadgasm. I nearly died.
Saturday was even more jam-packed than Friday because the IDKE conference went ALL DAY, from 9-5. Our troupe did a workshop on doing drag outside the gender binary, and it ended up going pretty well. The people attending had crazy good ideas that they were very willing to share, and in the end they did a non-traditional interpretation of "Girls" by the Beastie Boys.
We had to rush back to our homebase to get dressed and ready for our act that night. I left all my glitter at home, so I borrowed some from one of the hosts of the show as well as a fellow Squaddie. Our act went well. We talked about the shoddiness of misogynistic drag KING culture, and hopefully people understood that we want to see drag that plays around with gender instead of re-inforcing heterosexuality, misogyny, etc.
It felt really good to perform the Peaches part ("I Don't Give A...") and throw around all these boxes with various labels and whatnot. GRRRRRRR!
That's how it felt.
Anyway. We stayed dancing until they closed down the place (4am) and didn't get to %%diary-the19thstory%%'s place until almost 5. Which reminds me! I stayed with the19thstory, and was extremely excited to find that she's just as cool in person as I've always thought she was online. I think the reason blogging meetups generally work out so well is that you've actually been reading someone's life, so you know how they think and feel about life's little situations. You also have a sense of history with them, and can ask about people in their lives without it seeming weird.
Anyway. Great times.
Sunday was brunch and traveling back home. There was an icky experience at the brunch performances, but I'd like to think it was countered by a) all the amazing performances that didn't make people feel hurty and b) meeting up with a couple of Canadians on the way to the airport. We rode the El with them and talked and just generally connected in a lot of good ways.
We flew home, and I'm still recovering. I seriously slept for almost 12 hours today. Eep. Tonight we're doing a show at Barnard. Wednesday and Thursday I'm subbing at the little pre-school. And Thursday night I have another date with The Missed Connection. It's a pleasantly full week.
I am a pleasantly full me. 100%.
